Who are you protecting Canada for?

My name is Melissa and my brain never stops! It can feel impossible to find a moment of quietness within our highly connected world.

My great failsafe to de-stress is being outdoors with my Labrador retriever / in-house sage of wisdom. On our walks, we can marvel at the changing of the seasons, the overwhelming visual sensations amid the quietness, and the sheer phenomena that nature gifts us with every day. Nature is a great equalizer – you don’t need a specific brand of shoes to hike a trail and the trees don’t care what kind of car you drive. As my dog proves, you don’t even need to wear pants! … but they are highly recommended for humans.

As Canadians, we cannot let this ultimate privilege slip away. Every year we lose natural habitat to development. Human development is not only inevitable, but necessary – however, Canadians are in an incredible position to ensure development is not traded for preservation, but the two concepts are instead complementary and live in harmony.

I am an advocate for the NCC and a supporter of the Earth Day campaign because I think my dog has it right – he just expects nature to be there when he is ready to play, and so should we, and so should future Canadians!

About the Earth Day Challenge

The NCC needs your support to continue its heroic efforts in creating conservation areas in BC. All funds donated go directly toward the conservation of land through both acquisition and the establishment of endowment funds – this ensures that conservation areas are protected in both the short and long term.

NCC’s presence in BC since 1974 has been astounding, with over 130 projects completed since 1974, more than 2,000 acres of protected land in BC’s Great Bear Rainforest, and 980,000 acres total of protected areas – help us reach 1,000,000 acres by Earth Day 2020!!

Help us conserve ONE MILLION ACRES in British Columbia by Earth Day 2020

In British Columbia, the Nature Conservancy of Canada has been conserving critical habitats, migratory corridors for wide-ranging species, and locations of remarkable biodiversity since 1974. In that time, our conservation achievements have resulted in the permanent protection of 999,081 acres (404,314 hectares) in British Columbia. That's 919 acres (372 hectares) away from 1 million acres, and that's the target we've set to surpass in BC before Earth Day 2020.

With your help, we can reach a significant milestone for conservation in BC. We invite you to declare yourself a “Force for Nature” in British Columbia by leaving a landmark with your donation to help us reach 1 million acres conserved forever.
